Women in Fly Fishing

Over the last few years I have seen a trend in the industry that suggests this is not only just a man’s sport, but more and more women love to fly fish. There are many companies who are creating lines just for women, which I think is great. I know women who are just as passionate about fly fishing as men; they have opened fly shops and have taking up guiding here in Maine.

Over the last few years I have seen more and more women coming with their husbands and I even have guided a few who left their husbands at home because they wanted to learn to fly fish and didn’t want the added pressure of their husband trying to show them. Actually, recently I took out two ladies and taught them to fly fish, Linda and Gail. I don’t think I have ever laughed so much guiding. I also don’t think I have ever seen two people so excited when they landed the big one. Here is the conversation after Gail landed her big small mouth,”I did it! That was so exciting! I thought I was going to pass out!” Gail shouted.”I know! Did you start to black out?” Linda replied.

I have great hope for the future of this sport and hope to see more women on the bow of my boat as they are great clients.
