3 Days and 9 Species

I am very lucky to be a very busy Maine fishing guide and I am very gratefulnfor that but it makes it hard to find time to actually get out and fish on my own. So I blocked out Memorial weekend this past spring and planned a fishing trip my boys but Tait(my oldest) had a opportunity to go to Boston area and tour the Patriots stadium, so that just left Jax and I, which I enjoy because it give me some one on one time with him.

Day one of the weekend we ended up going after smallmouth bass on the Penobscot but it wasn’t as simple as that. My  jet boat had a new impeller installed and we need to pick it up,so after doing so we hit the river. I didn’t go very far to start fishing I basically crossed the river and floated we were instantly into fish, we caught close to 40 fish but I had a client catch a 21″ bass a few day earlier and wanted to see if we could find it,so I went to start the motor and the impeller had frozen, it was in to tight. Keep in mind we are on the  west side of the river coming up onto some fast water and all I have is a trolling motor to get me to the other side where there are houses and the road.

I started across the river with he trolling motor and it seemed to take forever going at such a slow pace but just as we got to the other shore the batteries went dead, we were lucky. I pulled the boat up on shore and took what limited tools I had and tooth bottom part of the motor a part, so i am standing in the water with a hammer hitting the impeller because its jammed because I have no tool large enough to get it off. i here ” need some help?” I say” I need some tools” He says”I have two of everything what do you need”, so I pull my boat down in front of his house and he gets me the right tools and I fix the impeller on the side of the river.  After that little adventure we decide to call it a day and get ready for the next day.

The next two days were less eventful but we covered some ground, Sunday we headed to the West branch of the Penobscot fro trout and salmon and then on Memorial day we headed tot he Belgrade Lakes area for pike and then back the Bangor area for crappie and large mouth. I put a few hundred miles on my truck but once we got started we wanted to see how many species we could catch in a weekend. If we would of planned better we could of fit in stripers and maybe brown trout.

I have always wanted to see really how many species I could catch in a weekend in Maine but I think I would have to run and gun all day. So one I catch one species I would have to pack up and move onto the next, which I have a hard time doing because I make one more cast then another and another and before I know it I am late. Maine is a great state for fishing and we have a lot of opportunities right in our back yard, so get out and enjoy them.
